Colombia will fight illegal gambling with AI

Colombia’s gambling regulator Coljuegos has inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence Center (CIAC) to monitor illegal activity of online gambling in real time at over 3,600 authorized gambling venues, the agency has affirmed. The initiative is part of a modernization process for Coljuegos, which is intended to take the entity into the twenty-first century.

Key Features of the CIAC:

1. Real-Time Monitoring: With the support of the CIAC, real-time data from 107,150 electronic slot machines and 16,645 bingo seats is monitored to ensure accuracy of transfers from each authorized gaming unit.

2. Control Dashboard for Online Illegality: The platform, developed with the help of the cybersecurity firm Kiggu, helps to identify and protect 16 authorized online operators against illegal betting websites operating on the web and dark web. It also makes illegal social media raffles visible and prevents cyberattacks.

3. Technological Infrastructure Monitoring: The third dashboard reports on the technological infrastructure of Coljuegos to monitor if SICOL and the operator portal run smoothly.

4. Operator Requests Management: The final dashboard aims to lower the response time for licensed gaming operators submitting new contract and renewal requests.

Since its inception last year, Coljuegos has issued more than 5,100 orders to block unauthorized betting sites — an amount that is expected to grow as efforts to monitor access to these sites are intensified. The next step for the CIAC, set for implementation in the coming months, is to implement real-time monitoring tools for online and territorial betting to ensure that Coljuegos can continue to protect resources designated for public health.
